New evidence hints a Pixel 4a 5G is coming after all

The 5G-enabled variant of the Pixel 4a is codenamed "bramble."

What you need to know

  • A U.S. NVMO has listed an upcoming Google Pixel phone as being compatible with its 5G network.
  • The device, which carries the model number G025E, could be the 5G-enabled variant of the Pixel 4a.
  • Google Pixel 4a 5G is rumored to be powered by a Snapdragon 765G chipset.

Last week, a report claimed that Google will be releasing not one, but two Pixel 4a models this year: Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a 5G. More evidence hinting at the existence of the Pixel 4a 5G has now surfaced, courtesy of U.S. MVNO Boom! Mobile.

As spotted by the folks at XDA Developers, Boom! Mobile's dedicated 5G coverage page includes an unannounced Google smartphone with model number G025E in the list of the 5G compatible phones. Since the model numbers G025J/G025N/G025M have been associated with the Pixel 4a, it is possible that the G025E is the model number for the Pixel 4a 5G.

The 5G-enabled variant of the Pixel 4a is said to be codenamed "bramble" and is tipped to be powered by Qualcomm's mid-range Snapdragon 765G chipset. Google's "flagship" Pixel 5 is also rumored to be powered by the same mid-range chipset. The 4G-only variant of the Pixel 4a, on the other hand, is expected to come with the less impressive Snapdragon 730 chipset under the hood.

Unfortunately, however, the Pixel 4a's launch date still remains a mystery. As per noted leaker Jon Prosser, the phone will likely be announced on August 3, although it may not go on sale until October. Google hasn't confirmed any plans yet, although it did "accidentally" leak the Pixel 4a on its Canadian store last week, revealing the phone's design before its official unveiling.
